What replaced the TSS visa
The Skills in Demand visa replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa and keeps the subclass number 482. It lets approved Australian employers sponsor skilled overseas workers when they cannot find suitable local staff, with streams based mainly on the salary offered and the occupation.
Salary and occupation settings
Each stream uses an income threshold and, in some streams, an occupation list. The thresholds are indexed and change over time. Employers in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and regional areas must pay at least the market salary and meet the current threshold.
Pathway to permanent residence
Workers who hold a 482 visa and meet the work experience requirement with their sponsor can often move to the subclass 186 permanent visa through the Temporary Residence Transition stream. Time spent with any approved sponsor may count towards eligibility.
482 visa responsibilities
| Party | Main responsibility |
|---|---|
| Employer | Become an approved sponsor and lodge nomination |
| Employer | Pay market salary and meet obligations |
| Worker | Meet skills, English and experience criteria |
| Worker | Follow visa conditions and work for sponsor |
- Employers must be approved sponsors before nominating any overseas worker.
- Check the latest income thresholds as they are indexed from time to time.
- Workers should collect strong evidence of relevant skilled work experience.
- Keep payslips and contracts as they matter for a later 186 application.
- Speak with Myra Visa before changing employers while on a 482 visa.
