From temporary sponsorship to permanent residence

What the 186 visa offers

The subclass 186 visa gives permanent residence to skilled workers nominated by an Australian employer. Holders can live and work anywhere in Australia, access Medicare and later apply for citizenship once eligible.

Streams of the 186 visa

The Temporary Residence Transition stream suits workers already on a 482 visa with the required experience. The Direct Entry stream suits applicants with a positive skills assessment and relevant experience. A Labour Agreement stream is available in some cases.

Employer requirements

The employer must be actively operating in Australia, offer a genuine full time position for at least two years, and pay a market salary at or above the required threshold. Businesses in Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth all use this pathway.
