What a bridging visa does
A bridging visa keeps you lawful in Australia while your substantive visa application is processed or under review. It usually comes into effect when your current visa expires, if you have lodged a valid application before expiry.
Types of bridging visas
Bridging visa A applies when you lodge while holding a substantive visa. Bridging visa B allows travel. Bridging visa C applies when you lodge without a substantive visa, and Bridging visa E covers people who are unlawful or in specific situations.
Work and travel conditions
Work rights depend on your bridging visa type and previous visa conditions. Most bridging visas end when you leave Australia, so apply for a Bridging visa B before overseas travel if you want to return.
Bridging visa types
| Type | When it applies | Travel |
|---|---|---|
| BVA | Lodged while holding a visa | No |
| BVB | Granted for travel | Yes, within period |
