Subclass 189: Skilled Independent
The 189 visa is permanent and does not need sponsorship. Invitations are issued through SkillSelect based on occupation and points. Competition is often high, so many applicants also prepare for state nominated options to keep more doors open.
Subclass 190: Skilled Nominated
The 190 visa is permanent and requires nomination from a state or territory such as South Australia, Victoria or Queensland. Nomination adds points and each state sets its own criteria, often linked to living or working in that state.
Subclass 491: Skilled Work Regional
The 491 visa is a provisional regional visa nominated by a state or sponsored by an eligible relative. You live and work in designated regional areas like Adelaide, Hobart or Geelong, and may later apply for permanent residence through subclass 191.
