Points categories
Points are awarded for age, English language ability, overseas and Australian skilled employment, qualifications, Australian study, specialist education, regional study, partner skills, Professional Year, accredited community language and nomination or sponsorship.
The minimum and the reality
The pass mark is generally 65 points, but invitations for popular occupations often need much higher scores. Improving English results or gaining more skilled experience are often the quickest ways to lift your score.
Regional study and community language
Studying in a regional area such as Adelaide, Perth, Hobart or Newcastle may give extra points. A NAATI credentialed community language qualification can also add points, which many applicants overlook.
Ways to increase your points
| Action | Potential impact |
|---|---|
| Improve English to Superior | Significant points increase |
| Gain more skilled experience | Points rise with years worked |
| Complete Professional Year | Additional points |
| NAATI community language | Additional points |
| State nomination | Adds 5 or 15 points |
