Bringing your spouse or de facto partner to Australia

Onshore and offshore options

If you are in Australia, you usually apply for subclasses 820 and 801. If you are outside Australia, you apply for subclasses 309 and 100. Both involve one application with two stages: a temporary visa first and a permanent visa later.

Relationship evidence

Officers assess four areas: financial aspects, household, social aspects and commitment. Couples in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide or overseas should provide joint finances, a shared address, photos, travel records, communication history and statements from friends and family.

The sponsor's role

Your Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen partner must sponsor you. The sponsor must meet character requirements and certain limits on previous sponsorships. Sponsorship is now generally approved together with the visa application.
